UC to Offer Free Tuition to Native Americans
Beginning this fall, the University of California school system will now be waiving tuition and fees for Native American residents and members of federally recognized tribes. This new change will be implemented into all 10 of the school's campuses and will apply for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Penned the UC Native American Opportunity Plan, University of California President, Dr. Michael V. Drake, shared that this plan was enacted to encourage diversity, provide more accessible opportunities for education for Native American students and pay retribution for previous wrongs done to Native tribes. The University of California is committed to recognizing and acknowledging historical wrongs endured by Native Americans, Dr. Drake stated in a letter, I am proud of the efforts the University has made to support the Native American community, including the creation of the UC Native American Opportunity Plan, and appreciate our conversations to date on all the ways in which we can better support Native American students.
