Latinas on the Rise
Alaqua Cox
Throughout the years, finding positive Native American representation in media, though improved, has been hard to come by. But last year, Native American actress, Alaqua Cox, helped change this narrative. Making her on-screen debut this year in the Disney+ original series, Hawkeye , Alaqua Cox is playing the Marvel Universe's first Native American superhero and one of the first Marvel superheroes with a physical disability. Just like her character, Maya Lopez, Cox is Native American, deaf and uses a prosthetic leg. Though her character is seen as an antagonist at first, she quickly becomes a fan favorite good guy as the series progresses. In fact, Lopez will be reprising the role of this side character in the television show, Echo , where she will be the main character. I believe kids deserve to see inclusivity and accurate representation, Cox told the Hollywood Reporter , It will make kids with all types of cultures and disabilities feel like our dreams can break free from limitations.
