The National Museum of the American Latino Debuts First Exhibit
After years of campaigning, legislation passed for the Smithsonian to establish the National Museum of the American Latino in December 2020. While the museum in its full capacity isn't expected to open for about 10 more years, the Smithsonian recently debuted its first gallery dedicated to Latino history and culture at the National Museum of American History: Presente! A Latino History of the United States. The exhibit is being considered a precursor to what's to come at the upcoming American Latino Museum and highlights the stories of famous Hispanic and Latinx trailblazers beginning with the colonial-era and covering figureheads to as recent as Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Along with being the first of its kind, the gallery is the largest museum complex in the world, at about 4,500 square feet. The exhibit is also being called one of the most accessible museum pieces as it is fully bilingual (English and Spanish) and includes aids for the visually and hearing impaired.
